Thumbs up Meaningful ICONS for your HOSTER plugins

: U P D A T E : DOWNLOAD the ZIP file in the attachments below in the LAST POST in the very end of this thread, well down below. ꜜꜜꜜ

I assembled a small collection that should cover some of the most popular HOSTERS ICONS.

Here's some of them:

(click the image to see it in full size)

I couldn't tell which ones jDownloader already had and which ones I added, so I packed all the ones that aren't those 2 small black letters with a white background. I just saw that there's some of them that seam to be "repeated", but it works for me here and I didn't really care to spend more time erasing some of them (and risking erasing the wrong one... ).

HERE is the LINK for you to download it: **External links are only visible to Support Staff****External links are only visible to Support Staff**
( http )( : )( // )( mir.cr )( / )( 0Y3IME5I ) ( remove the parenthesis )

I also put it as an attachment in this post, but I'm not quite sure how this works in this forum...

edit: DON'T GRAB THE FILE ABOVE, GET THE UPDATED VERSION FURTHER DOWN THIS THREAD ON THIS LINK http://board.jdownloader.org/showpos...4&postcount=12

Just unpack all the .png files into your jDownloader folder, typically could be something more or less like this:
C:\Program Files\jDownloader\jd\img\hosterlogos\

where "C:\Program Files\jDownloader\" is where your own program folder is located and "\jd\img\hosterlogos\" is the path where the small icon files should go (the folder already exists in your own install of the program).

When asked, you must replace all existing files with the new ones.

I hope this can be of use to anyone else. I love being able to see all the hosters own icons from inside jDownloader. It really helps me make faster decisions about which host to choose, which ones to drop, etc.

I don't know how long this will last, so catch it while you can...

That's great news, Jiaz,
I just hope you keep the structure of it "flexible", so that in case we don't like some of the icons "automatically feched" we can replace them with a more distinct/suitable one, maybe change a color or two, etc.

Another thing to take into consideration (maybe you already did) is that some hosts will present their "favicon" in different formats than the needed .PNG (mostly .ICO, but I've seen some strange ones like .GIF) and, even worse, some of them are not the required size (16x16 pixels). And some others yet will give you a blank icon or even nothing at all.

Question some new doubts about the auto-fetch... (sorry)

Thank you much for that fast reply, Jiaz!
I'm really glad those icons will still be replaceable.

I read above again and now I'm a little bit confused:
I'm assuming jd will search directly into each fileserver site for the favicon image, convert it to a 16x16 PNG if it isn't already in that format, and then save it to our hard disk - and this now is what confuses me - replacing any pre-existing image for that particular fileserver already in the folder (?? or not?).

So... What will be the "trigger" for jd to go lookin' for new icons? and how many times will it do it? only once? or each time the program is updated?

Here's an example (unibytes com) of an icon that would be not so good if autofetched (I hope you can see it):
autofeched:

jd will check the favicon folder if an image exists with the hostname
if no -> autofetch, save, scale and use
if yes -> load and scale and use

so just save or replace it
jd will not overwrite existing favicons at the moment, you want refresh them, clear the folder/icon and jd will refetch them

Thumbs up Yet some more ICONS

I just thought I cold "update" the Hoster ICONS package with the lastest ones, since we're probably yet a long way until the new version comes alive (other that the nightly versions, which I'm not brave enough to try).

Here's what has been added lately:

Some of those icons are "custom made", e.g. their host didn't have a proper icon or (in the case of http links and directhttp) jD didn't have a proper icon for it.

You probably can get the file attached in this post, but if not just follow the mir.cr (mirrorcreator.com) link below:
mir.cr/0V7EWKKC (copy and paste on your browser)

Thumbs up 609 HOSTERs ICONS

I took the necessary "courage" and ran the Nightly
version
; indeed it downloads all icons for the HOSTs that
doesn't have one already, except for the ones that obviously doesn't
provide one on their home page (some of those I've done manually,
using their logos);

having said that, it's also true that many of those icons are
very sloppy made favicons, many does not conform to the
16x16 standard;

I know it's not obligatory, but it's much better to have
an icon that has been manually scaled down
to this tiny size than to have something automatically downsized,
without the option to choose how much
contrast/sharpening/scaling algorithm/posterization
you'll apply and obviously without the chance to fill in some
extra pixels,add some effects like shadow or glow, further increase
contrast/luminosity/add or remove transparence/etc
.

One thing I still can't understand is why jD insists on
downloading just 1 specific icon (megaporn.com) into it's own folder,
separete from the rest of the icons, with a name of video.png?

So here is the new icons-pack with
wooping 609 icons in total,
many of which have been manually edited to
improve visualization upon JD interface with the proper 16x16
size
.

If you want to, just grab the pack Attached below.

This is a great improvement for the stable version. Thanks for the hours (days?) you spent collecting them.

Thank you, roshambo!
I wish they would at least "upgrade" the stable icons with this pack, since it's really harmless to the version (it won't have any unpredictable effect on any platform) and it is a great improvement over those blank square double-letters icons.

And here's yet another update with 654 hosterlogos favicons (I think it was about time...)

Cool 810 Hosterlogos Favicons

WOW! A big milestone in terms of hoster icons:

810 - 8 - 1 - 0 ! ! ! icons checked one by one, many of which are manually made (for sites that doesn't have a favicon) or carefully resized, using the best filters, sharpening and resizing algorithms with all the necessary touch-ups.

ALL ICONS are 16x16 in size, so there's no "guesswork" when jD loads them (no internal re-scaling necessary);

There are still about 420 icons still "missing"... (and obviously not included in this package);

Note that a lot of those "missing" icons belong to sites that either does not have a favicon properly setup or, even worse, is completely offline. Maybe one day we'll reach zero-double-letter-white-square icons, but I doubt it... I've got a strong impression that there are many hosters that are still "active" in jD even though the site is completely dead - which means even if I wanted, I couldn't get a logo from the site to compose an icon for it;

Also worth mentioning: about 230 icons were updated from their old versions (some had color changes, some had a completely different design, some were another small change, etc - e.g. mediafire, soundcloud, etc); so, if you grabbed another old package, the recommendation is to replace all with those in this package that are current and up-to-date.

Having said all that, I also must include a disclaimer:
- Many of those icons manually made are very much so a matter of taste; some people will find them horrendous, some will like it; luckily, it's quite easy to change them...
- Also some icons have been modified from their original version in order to be more easily visualized in a dark theme inside jD; some people will find this outrageous, so also feel free to change them back to the original versions; it's also quite easy.

(click to see the whole image with only half of the 809 icons!)

Now to a few doubts, just in case (it's possible someone has an answer):

( 1 ) - How do I "force" (or "ask" or anything similar) jD Nightly to automatically try to download the remaining 420 icons from the sites that are iconless?

I know it is supposed to do it automatically, but I would like to understand the logic behind it - does it search all 420 sites each time jD Nightly starts to see if has been a change in status and the site now has a favicon? or it only searches once and after determining that the site "does not have a favicon", it never searches again?

( 2 ) - Doesn't it make sense to gradually fill in the icon repository in jD's site instead of having all white squares sitting there forever?

The "automatic" download of jD Nightly is a good solution, but it's far, far away from the ideal; too many icons with different sizes that doesn't scale well (not even counting that different icons should optimally be scaled using different algorithms); too many sites that even doesn't have a favicon (and one must be created manually); some icons that really don't display well in both white and dark interfaces; even some sites that will give you an empty icon as their favicon;

The longer it takes, the harder it's gonna get... (many more icons to inspect, create, etc); I'm more than halfway through... I wonder if somebody wanna help... (and also if there will come a day when there will be "official" support for those icons)

Lightbulb quick update 2012.05.20 (4 more icons)

A quick update with 4 more icons...

(very weird this complete change of Logo by Uploading.com - at first I thought it was a completely different hoster and I had typed the wrong address...)

Hi,

JDownloader does the following
1.) try to download the file and if it is okay, save to disk and reuse it till it gets deleted
1.1.) autorefresh does not exist yet
2.) if download failes, the favicon loader gets blacklisted for some time (to avoid dos) and then the blacklist gets removed and it will try again.

you can replace the icons with your owns if you want to.
we download the original favicon and use it for further uses and scale if needed. having the original favicon allows us to use best available quality.

In theory, yes...

One of the problems is that many favicons are very poorly made and don't scale well at all!

Other problem is that many hosters might be offline at the moment when you try to grab the favicon (or they may have been "discontinued" - the site has been shut down), and it's still nice to have their icons displayed correctly, even if the program can't grab them.

Another issue is that a few very popular filehosters (like fileRIO) do not have a favicon (but they might have a logo from which I can produce a favicon) and the automatic 2-Letter system isn't always easy to know the hoster just by the icon.

For these and a few other reasons, here's another batch of icon files (1,000+ in total this time); if you're using jD version 2 beta, like me, you just have to unpack them all in "c:\Program files\jD\JDownloader v2.0\themes\standard\org\jdownloader\images\fav\" ( substitute "c:\Program files\jD\" for your main jDownloader folder path ) and agree to replace all existing files there; You won't regret it, but in any case you might back all of them in a zip file before just in case you want to revert the operation.

My point is: Why wait for jD to download all these files for you? Why gamble with the icons it won't be able to download? Why use files that do not scale well and you simply can't read when it's down to 16 pixels? It's only my opinion, but I really think this pack is worth it... Just unpack, sit back and relax.

I think we are downloading them for legal reasons and because it is easier than using a handmade database but teammembers may correct me if I'm wrong.

quite old thread psp ;p

that said, why let JD do this for you??? Simple answer is its more convenient! You download from some random host that may or may not be contained in packaged list, means it should always be able to grab and scale to clients needs.
