@JDL: I've explained via E-Mail.
Chances are high that the filesystem that you download on doesn't support sparse files and therefore the os has to fill the fill with zeros in order to write at specific file position. and dowloading a large file (in your example 5 gb) with 10 connections, will force the OS to write nearly 4.5GB of empty file before the actual download can begin.
