But why is it then first trying to crack the password and asking the user to provide one if cracking fails?
Obviously, the program indeed detected that the file needs a password. But there is finally a problem forwarding the password to unrar in the case the user had to manually provide it.
Or, in other words:

If the user is asked to provide a password, this password is NOT given to unrar. Thus, switching to some other unpacking engine will most likely not cure this bug.
