Default Browser extension no longer works in older Firefox?

Has something changed in the past few days? I've been using firefox 56.0.1 for captcha completion using the plug-in and it's been working fine. This is ALL this version of the browser gets used for, just the plug-in.

Now FF is telling me the extension is disabled because it "could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled".

Clicking on their 'more information' link takes me to their page about unsigned extensions:
**External links are only visible to Support Staff****External links are only visible to Support Staff**

In the about:config I have xpinstall.signatures.required set to false.

If I try saving the file from https://extensions.jdownloader.org/firefox.xpi and opening it into FF it reports "this add-on could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt".

When I unzip the firefox.xpi file and look in the manifest.json file it reports as being version 3.3.20

If I use the temporary add-ons debugging it reports: "Reading manifest: Error processing background.persistent: Event pages are not currently supported. This will run as a persistent background page."

What am I running up against that's keeping the extension from working as it was just days ago?

I tried stepping back to 3.3.19 (from https://extensions.jdownloader.org/f...-3.3.19-fx.xpi) and that won't install either.

Which is 3.3.20 and gives the same error message. I'm just puzzled as to what changed from now and few days ago that's led to this problem.

Granted, it's an older version of FF, but one that's worked fine for this up until now (and doesn't come laden with all their added crap from recent versions).

Version 3.3.20 which is linked on the website I linked in my last post works just fine in FF "136.0.1 (64-bit)" under Windows.

Why are you using such an old FF version?

I haven't done anything on my end, beyond the usual of letting the JD app itself do updating. I can't say specifically when this started to fail like this as I never had to pay attention to the browser plug-in before. It always "just worked" so I never feared updates. Nor have I updated the browser itself (it's configured not to update).

Is the update not digitally signed? Am I running up against some other certificate timestamp issues or something?

By preference of not having the added garbage they jam into the latest browsers all the time. That and it was working perfectly just days ago.

The old root certificates in firefox have expired, read
support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/root-certificate-expiration

I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do to make it working again

This is the correct answer. Using debug mode works as a stop-gap, for now.

It's been convenient to make use of an entirely separate browser to avoid complications. At least JD is one of the few good tools out there that allows indicating a specific browser, instead of falling back on the OS default.

So what stops you from doing this with a newer version of FF?

@wkearney99
Small addendum (this is not advertisement!).
You can also use [paid] captcha solver services like "2captcha.com" in JDownloader, then you do not need the browser solver at all.
Solving for example a reCaptcha captcha typically costs like 0,00X$ so it's not even expensive.
You can find the supported services here: Settings -> Captcha
