remi: saving links to DLC will also encrypt them - so user will not be able to check or download the links in browser - after that user will loose control over his links - sorry, but this solution is only partial solution...

Cool

The same is true for the database files, so I don't see your point.

I've never denied that my workaround was partial, to the contrary.

This is why we really need (in jD) good export/import system - which will allow to restore all the links with the same state as they were before export (urls, creation dates for packages/links etc).
Of course it seems that simple database backup was sufficient as of yet, but... with the latest "improvement" from java developers we see that something more independant (XML seems to be natural solution because of its hierarchical/tree like structure) would be also a very good solution.

Cool

I read that the next major release will treat incomplete, resumable downloads differently. The data will no longer be stored in the database.

XML's advantage is not its hierarchy but its flexibility, the many tools and standards and the tagging which makes parsing easy.

Note that in the nineties hierarchical databases were replaced by relational databases.

I support XML export of all the data, not only links but also download volumes and all link state changes. This would be nice for generating statistics and measure download performance.

There were about 200-300 links on there yesterday. All those youtube videos...

I put my laptop in hibernation mode to keep them on because I knew closing JD clears linkgrabber links after reopening. Then my dad turned it on then shut it down, despite the note not to shut it down. Two weeks of work gone.

The links in the download tab are saved, though:

I know I could have put the links in the download tab but JD decrypts videos into lots of different file formats: .mp3, .flv., .webm, .mp4, and in different resolutions (240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, AAC/MP3 audio, etc.). I had to cull the ones not in the format and resolution I wanted (in hindsight, I could have selected the ones I did want and gone on with those); I was about halfway done.

Instead of lashing out at my dad since he probably didn't know about hibernate I set out to find some way to restore the linkgrabber links since I knew it was possible. I found some solutions on this forum:

http://board.jdownloader.org/showthread.php?t=16623 - this looked promising, renaming the config folder "config.backup" didn't work - it stayed a folder too.

I made a copy of the config folder onto the desktop, zipped it and changed the file tag to ".backup" and stuck that into the JD folder. I made other copies and named them "config.bak", and config (same as original folder). I deleted the 20th and 21st updates of Java and downloaded and installed the 17th. All of this with JD closed. Then I opened JD. Surprised, I saw JD reinstall. There was nothing in either the Download or Linkgrabber tabs. I noticed the passwords for unrar/extract were gone too. A little bit later I noticed a new config folder was made. I figured a new one was made every time JD started up if there wasn't one already (the zipped and renamed one was the old folder). I deleted the new one and the .backup one, then copied and pasted the old config folder from the desktop back into the JD folder. Lo and behold, I saw the two images I posted above and the passwords back again. So config must have the links saved within it. One thing I noticed that may hint at this is the larger size of the old config folder (1.20 MB) as opposed to the newer one (~677 KB).

I know about remi's "save linklist" feature - this works only for links already in the Download tab, not the ones under Linkgrabber the last times I used it. I like editestowy's suggestion for an export/import feature for future installments and updates so links aren't tampered with. I know of the "save JD in C:\\JDownloader" etc. suggestion - it would be the same as if it were in Program Files if the program is indeed portable.

How do I get those links back with today's features and things in folders?

Miscellaneous facts:
/using Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3
/COMODO Internet Security Premium and McAfee Total Protection are used, both have JDownloader as trusted programs
/JDownloader version 0.9.581
/I still have the old config folder on my desktop in case the technology to extract old links from the previous session ever arrives
/I will definitely ctrl+b more often this time (the latest backup is from 5/4/2011), though I wish there were an automatic backup feature that backs up links in both download (with progress data) and linkgrabber tabs every ten minutes when you open the JD window. e.g., you copy a link and look at the linkgrabber operation progressbar for whatever reason, go do other things, and minimize JD. Fifteen minutes later you copy another link, open the JD window again to do some management and then the backup feature does its thing.

I can understand the situation with your father. He has more power than you and is probably paying your bills. In this screwed world money still decides about power.

The bad news is that jD has no function that saves the Linkgrabber links. I know you won't believe it but it's the bare truth.

The good news is that I think jD does a good job saving the other links and has some backup and versioning features that you won't find in most other programs.

I think backup and versioning shouldn't strictly be part of any program but part of a generic backup strategy. There are many specialised backup programs that will version your data files and some can do that with open files, in real time and in the cloud.

Note that the "save linklist" feature is not my feature. I would have included the Linkgrabber links.

Don't know if this really fits into this topic (cause I didn't lost my Links yet), but regarding this topic, is it possible to Backup the complete list via File > Save > Save Linklist (or backup, dunno), update Java and then reimport the saved Linklist?

Or if this doesn't work, can I build a DLC for each package (which would be a pain in the ass though but better than nothing) and then reopen them? Does that work?

I don't wanna try out at the moment, there a quite a lot of links in my List I don't know here they came from etc ^^

Ah, by the way I'm using a Mac and don't know if the topic mentioned really affects me cause the update that came from the mac update app today is Java 1.5, is this the same version as 1.6 on windows?

Be happy you didn't lose your links yet. Make backups (Ctrl-B) and don't forget to move your links to jD's Download pane.

If you want to update java, don't update to the new JRE 1.6 update 26, because there are problems with that new version and you can lose your links as you can read in this thread.

If you update to another version you don't need to do anything with jD, because a normal java installation doesn't have any impact on jD's installation and data.

JRE 1.5 and 1.6 are different releases.

I know 1.5 and 1.6 are different when it's the same platform, but is 1.5 on Mac equal to the 1.6 version on Win? Or is Mac affected by the update at all?

I don't know if backup really solves the problem cause if I read this thread right, some people had problems with the standard jD-Backups so I though of the Link saving menu :S

They're different when they have different version numbers, independently of the platform they're running on.

You read it well. A backup isn't useful at all for upgrading to that crippled JRE 1.6 update 26, because that version can't even read jD's database file. Don't upgrade to that version and you'll avoid the problem.

OK, so I guess as long as there is no 1.6 version available for mac I don't have to worry.

But nevertheless, for all others who want to update to this version, is it possible to generate DLCs for each package and after the update reopen them?
Maybe this could help some guys here ^^

They can read my post #38 before upgrading to that bad version or if they accidentally upgraded to that bad version (this will happen more often) they can always downgrade.

ah didn't see that, so if I understand right the save linklist option does work afterall?

/edit
Just saw the Update I got here is 1.6.0_26 for 64bit macs, the 1.5 version was fpor 32bit macs, so it's the "critical" update after all^^

/edit2
So, just updated and strangly I didn't lost anything, no settings, no download list, nothing, I can continue as always. So the update seems to affect only windows? Got no Probs on Mac here...

You see to what an ImageIcon class security hole can lead.

You've only one way to go and that's downgrading. Remove all your java and install the 32 bits version of JRE 1.6 update 21. See "**External links are only visible to Support Staff**.
this downgrading thing's recovered thousands links of mine and my life as well...today is probably the happiest day of my insignificant life...many thanks

I'm sorry with you if you think your life is insignificant. The fact alone that you're happy is the proof that life is worth living. Happiness should be the highest moral purpose of your life. Don't let yourself be enslaved by your government and other monopolistic powers. Break free.
