Default update: no feedback

If I click the "check for new updates" button, absolutely nothing happens in the GUI.

I have no idea if it is in progress, or if there are no updates, or what.

Looking in the log I see:

Code:
02m:24s.547 - FINER [java_downloader] -> Checking for available updates
02m:28s.047 - SEVERE [java_downloader] -> Webupdater offline or nothing to update
Which is almost as unhelpful.

Which is it: "Offline" or "Nothing to update"?
Does JD really not know? It just waits for 3.5 seconds and gives up?

I'd hope that an update button would give one of 3 responses:
1) "Updates found, blah blah: proceed?"
2) "No new updates".
3) "Server problem. See [some news page]/try later."

But not just "no news is good news", because it isn't.

Now I have no idea if my JD is up to date, or if it has a problem contacting the update server -- there have been no updates for several days -- or have there? I don't know.

JD shutsdown the webupdater if there are no updates... that's why you see that error.

You get the SAME error if
1) there are no updates
2) the update server is not responding.

They are very different situations and I want to know which one applies.

Cool

You're right. Customer messages should be clear and not cause confusion.

However, the most urgent message that should be changed is the "no permissions to write to hard disk" status message because it is utterly wrong.
