Angry Really Getting Sick and Tired of the JD Crashes

I've never had as many computer crashes in my life as I have since I've started using this confounded Java program. These past few months have been really discouraging. Now I think I know what Steve Jobs meant a few years back when he referred to Java as a "ball and chain."

As I've stated in other threads, I keep my console and activity windows open to see what affect JD is having on my system. Aside from the fact that it totally hogs my CPU load, there's a new twist: A new crash cause. I didn't have the JD log active when it crashed, so after the crash and restart, there was no log information for you to view. I looked at the log after the reboot and there was nothing related to the crash.

I saved the Mac Crash Report as well as copied the Console log to give you an idea of what is going on. Like I said, this new "JavaApplicationStub" malloc error happens all the time now; it just started over the past two or three days. I haven't done anything new to my system lately except repaired Permissions and checked the directory structure with Disk Warrior. Whenever the following starts vomiting itself all over my console, I know a JD crash is imminent. I am pasting it here because the size of the text document, a mighty 28k, is too big for your board to accept as an attachment:

===============================================

Also, since the Mac crash log text file is too big (a whopping 52k) to be attached to this message, here it is in its full glory. Again, I couldn't upload a JD log because when I enabled it after the crash and restart, there was nothing in there pertaining to the crash.

Here's the Mac crash log:

When was the last time you updated that machine?

As your running on PPC and 10.4.11 instead of 10.5

The Java your reporting (Java 1.5_10) is old and there is at least a few other updates, the latest I believe is to apple java 1.5_19 for one of the latest tiger updates.

It was in release Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9 "**External links are only visible to Support Staff**
Quote:
Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9 delivers improved reliability, security and compatibility for J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 and later.

This release updates J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19 and J2SE 1.4.2 to version 1.4.2_21.
If you don't wish to use software update or it does not grab properly you should be able to find the update here "**External links are only visible to Support Staff**

I would suggest though running software update on the machine to be sure to get all of the latest security patches and other fixes for that OS versus a manual update.

Update your Java and select to run JD in 32 bit mode if the app shows it available (I don't think it will as 10.4.11 was only a 32 bit OS primarily) ... then lets see what happens.

Actually it's just his signature that says 1.5_10. The actually crash report indicates he's already at 1.5.0_19.

He can however upgrade to OS X 10.5.8 with the computer he has listed. I can attest to no crashes with 10.5.8 and Java 1.5.0_26.

1 GB of RAM is low these days but that appears to be the maximum for his hardware.

yea your right kdean, I missed that some how when looking over the crash log.

Regardless though if he is not ready to upgrade the OS I would probably do a few things such as grabbing the java update again and reinstalling in case something has gotten corrupted. It has happened although rare.

I would also reinstall the last 10.4.11 update again but be sure to use the Combo update not the light update as the combo will fix and install things that may be broken or needed that was missed with previous updates.

Of course before doing this I would first check permissions and run a Disk utility drive check on the drive also. This might actually fix some or most problems if the drive directory structure etc has gotten confused or if the drive may be failing.

One might try clearing cache files in the directory /SourceCache/HotSpot15/ maybe if there are actually cahce files there. I would probably also check the other cache files one can delete safely in other areas of the system.

There were some problems with certain builds of java and one can test to see if things are at least working as they should be at "http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml"

The machine in question should be able to take up to 2G ram and I am assuming this is an early 2006 Mac mini.
The video is only 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory so yes of course a ram upgrade would be of help also.
Tech specs for Mac mini 1.5GH Early 2006 "**External links are only visible to Support Staff**

Now if one decides to also upgrade to 10.5.x be aware that when one installed the update to 10.5.8 (use the Combo update) originally one needed to install it twice to fix a bug in the updater that would cause some permissions to report improperly. I think apple may have fixed that but not a 100% sure. Be aware also some production type apps being used may need to be updated but that again would be a different issue for the end user.

Thanks so far, gents kdean and Statter. BTW, I edited my sig to show the proper version of Java I'm running.

As far as my Mac Mini (10,2), it's from late-2005 and is, unfortunately, maxxed out in terms of RAM (1GB). That's pretty much why I haven't upgraded to Leopard. As I said, things have been generally fine for me on 10.4.11 until these JD issues. I just don't know if I have enough hardware to handle the 10.5 OS. And buying new hardware right now isn't an option for me.

Regarding revisiting the updates for 10.4.11 and Java, that's an option I hadn't yet considered. I have a little trepidation to do that (the OS one, at least), but may try. I'll definitely re-install the Java package.

And I'll definitely flush the cache files you pointed out, Statter, if they're there.

Hopefully some of these measures will help with the crashes.

I appreciate the replies.

I've run combo updaters overtop the same version before and it's pretty painless, so User0 I wouldn't worry about it causing you any issues. As was stated it often clears up issues.

hmmm ok as it is an earlier version than I though it was being a 1.5ghz and your maxed out on ram then if you upgrade to 10.5 it may run slower still in some areas although most of the later updates tend to fix a lot of it. The video may be your biggest slowdown piece of hardware. Depending on what you actually use the machine for would be the major consideration for upgrading or not.

The combo update for 10.4.11 will not hurt your system at all. If you were restoring then yes with 10.4.x and 10.5.x you would need to back up before restore on general principle. with 10.6.x Apple actually fixed it and there is no longer a need to do what we had to do in previous versions. It is a much easier and faster restore now

If you can be sure to also check and repair permissions before and after any update on general principle, and also see if you can also check the boot up drive for consistency just incase.

Default Get Java 1.6 if you can.

Some of this is off topic, but as of the next JD release, there will only be "legacy support" of Java 1.5. Java 1.6 or 1.7 will be required.

Even now, it is difficult to test on Java 1.5 for OS-X (I do not think there is a PPC OS-X 10.4 computer available to the development group). This might be part of your problem.

You could search for PPC compatible Java 1.6 (not update 18) as either binary or source code. This would not be an Apple Limited Edition Java, but a Linux Java. The Terminal should be able to run almost all standard Linux code. You might have to use command line switches when you start Java to tell it you do not have a modern graphic adapter (such as -Dsun.java2d.ddscale=true). What you will not get is the Mac look and Feel (PLAF to Sun).

Check out
Code:
stackoverflow.com/questions/613175/java-6-on-mac-powerpc-with-mac-os-x-10-4
or
Code:
Google +powerPC (jre OR jdk OR jvm OR java) 1.6 "OS-X 10.4"
You will find Linux builds of Java 6 for PowerPC. You can try and see if one works by installing it as a Linux application (/usr/bin/Java/Java6). You might have to download some support libraries as well.

Unfortunately drbits, he is using a PPC Mac first of all and although 1.6 is available for the intel machines it is not available for the PPC machines to my knowledge. Apples Last supported Java for PPC 10.4.x is 1.5.x.
Java 1.6 is also designed to my knowledge for intel processors now and PPC has been left in the dust by Sun who develops Java in the first place. Mac modifies Suns updates for the Mac as needed for security and usability.

Even SoyLatte's X11-based port of 1.6 is only for Mac OS X Intel machines.

The specs for that years Mac mini OS if this one is the correct one "**External links are only visible to Support Staff**
Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.4.2 (8D40) Maximum MacOS: X 10.5.8

Even with installing 10.5.x on the PPC the end user will not be able to use Java 1.6.x

Quote:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 adds Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05 to your Mac. This update does not replace the existing installation of J2SE 5.0 or change the default version of Java.

The update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later, and a 64-bit Intel-based Mac. Apple had previously seeded a developer's preview of Java SE 6 for Leopard to ADC developers.
Unfortunately JD may eventually have to abandon PPC's :(

As a side note after typing all this out, seeing DruidCtba's Problem although similar may be best moved to a windows problem topic. I also think that maybe for sanity sake the board should consider maybe separation of Operating system specific type problems. .... Just a thought

yes, Statter, you bookmarked the correct model of my machine from Everymac.

I was just about to follow drbits' recommendations on looking for alternate versions of Java 1.6 when I read your latest post. I do recall reading very recently that the SoyLatte port did not support PPCs.

So, I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed for awhile.

Interestingly, after a recent crash, I restarted JD and chose the "Restore JD" option in the File menu. What happened after that was that the program closed, then instead of JD relaunching, the application "Java.JDownloader.jar" launched instead. It had all my d/l links intact, so I gave it a shot. Even though I had to re-OK all the outgoing connection requests in LittleSnitch, the application ran without a hitch for quite awhile.

good to hear the restore JD Option kicked in and seems to have helped considerably.

The question then comes to how often do you crash?
In reality one should not have any crashes on OS X unless there is a kernel panic which which usually leads to a hardware problem although sometimes they can be cause by other preference. ktext type corruptions.
Consistent Crashes can cause apps settings etc to get corrupted causing even more problems.

Restarting due to installing an app or system update sometimes happens but that does not cause the crashes of course and is a different issue, actually a non issue.

Again I will recommend Check your system permissions and hard drive(s) as soon as possible. If you also had Applecare originally you should have gotten a repair/test Cd that also tests other components in the computer such as memory, video etc. If you lost it you should be able to get hold of Applecare to get a replacement.

In understand what Statter is saying, but I was not talking about getting Apple Java 1.6 for PPC, that will never happen (software availability reasons, not because the PPC wasn't a better processor).

There are PPC versions of Java 1.6 (not SoyLatte, I had already ruled that out). They are designed for Linux. Java should run if it is installed for Linux. The issue is whether the graphics display, keyboard, and mouse on the Apple will be supported by the Linux software that is the kernel and Terminal for OS-X 10.4. Installing the X11 for PPC Linux may be necessary. The other hardware problems should be as easy to get around.

Comment: It is easy to say that something is not possible, but it is much harder to prove it.

This is part of a problem that Apple deliberately created for their users. Apple OS is compatible with the Apple BIOS and the BIOS specifications are hidden from the public. So Apple claims that only Apple approved software can run on the BIOS (except for the old Mountain Software licensed copy of Apple OS).

In particular, with a Linux kernel, almost anything is possible if somebody wants it enough. There are even versions of WINE (a VM for running Windows under Linux) for the PPC.

The issue of Java on a PPC has been met by many people. The Google search I recommended is specifically for this problem and several of the links are to articles about people who have managed to get a current Linux distribution, and Sun 1.6 working on a PPC with at least 512 MB of memory.

The difficulty with building software for Apples was that the BIOS was licensed with a restriction against reverse engineering (that Apple thought was airtight). However, one does not have to reverse engineer or steal documentation to reproduce the necessary parts of an API.

Yes one can often install a linux port but, often they will need to do some troubleshooting and redirection of the build set and instructions. Sometimes not for the faint of heart. I did not mention those for that reason. There are sometimes reasons for my insanity Sun building ports for PPC linux etc is still feasible for them as there are still a lot of other OSes that still use PPC architectures. Apple has basically said no more PPC and other than some security updates now and then which may include some iTunes or Web updates for security etc., there is no other support from Apple for PPC. Sun has decided also to not directly support those earlier machines from apple too.

Some apps that are ported from linux will not need much at all to work while usually items that need root access usually does need some modifications, sometimes enough to make ones head spin. Yes there are tools to help in this but even then things can get nuts. If one is brave enough or knowledgeable enough then yea they can go for the porting process but, that is beyond the scope of this topic I think.

While the mac is based on BSD and *nix the inner workings are different enough that straight linux ports or other *nix ports will not work unless the installs are modified for the pointers or tools expected.

WINE (usually requires x11 be installed of course) and other types of VM managers are readily available for the Mac too. If one really wanted to they could run windows either on top of the mac OS or separately if the machine is an intel base. For the PPC there are unfortunately fewer options and the best one was Virtual PC for Mac (PowerPC) which was eventually bought out by M$ who essentially let the product die after what to updates I think. It is still available sorta at M$ site for the mac.

Statter, per your recommendation, I reinstalled the OS X.4.11 Combo update, then did a permissions repair (there were some, not a lot, but a handful of files that needed corrected). Also did a volume check/directory check/fsck and that was OK. Finally, I reinstalled Java for 10.4, Release 9, the (apparently) final Java update for 10.4.

Have had JD running all day today without crashes, although today I've been strictly on free RS, so there are far fewer d/l's than my usual heavy-duty HF activity, meaning less UNRARing, which always seems to lead to hangs in the Finder and other applications I may have running simultaneously, then eventual crashes. I like the convenience of JD's built-in Unrar, but I'm thinking I might disable it and Unrar manually for awhile to see if that lessens the amount of hangs and crashes.

My AppleCare for this machine ran out a couple of years ago but I probably still have the diagnostics CD somewhere in a box. I recently moved so I'll have to look for it but I'll run it if I can locate it.

Back in 2005-2006, I was really into X-windows. I installed the Developer Tools, XDarwin, Fink, KDE and scores of binaries and packages. I'm not a programmer or Unix guru, so in essence I really didn't know what the heck I was doing, but I enjoyed running X-windows even instead of Aqua, for awhile anyway. Then I got really buried in work and a relationship, even got away from my Mac for a couple of years. Sacrilege. Thankfully, it's over...:outch:

Anyway, I mention this because I've forgotten most of what I learned as far as X11. If I go ahead and try doc's referral to seek out and install a Linux Java 6, it will be like learning how to ride a bike again. I don't know if I'm that adventurous anymore. Well, I guess the only way to do it is to dive in. I still have the "sw" folder in my root directory. I'm sure I'll need to update Fink and the rest of the key packages. And my Terminal skills will need quite a bit of dusting off.

Well, my mind isn't made up, so in the meantime, thanks for your input, gentlemen.

@DruidCtba

You're using JRE 6.0_18-b07. Get rid of update 18 and replace it with 17 or 21.
