Thank you very much for your help, I appreciate it.

Although initially it caused me confusion, and I could not understand what the error was all about or what I had to do as I am far from being a JD expert!

Finally, I decided to check my general settings where I discovered that the reason why my downloads were aborting was because I was trying to download them onto a ghost directory(external HD). That's where your response(error: local IO) made sense to me. But still I don't know how the ghost directory was created and selected. Could a recent power-cut be the reason?
