Default Please make JDownloader work without operator

First of all - thanks for this product, it is very usable.
But the bad thing is that it is completely unable to handle error situations. It happens to me all the time, when I came back and see only stoic message "Download incomplete" for one (or more parts). Why should I care? If it is incomplete, just complete it! Or "No permission to write file on hard disk" which is totally cryptic message because it happens only for some files and no permissions changed. And there are also plenty of space on hard drive of course.
So please, think about making it more error-prone. Some option "Do whatever takes, but download it!" would be very nice

Thanks!

Cool

If you get a "No Permission to Write to Hard Disk" error, please consider these recommendations.

Thanks, but I do not see any reason why JDownload can't handle this state itself. 99% of users has no clue what 2) or 3) means, no user will be willing to uninstall antivirus and it is also very hard to choose JRE on Mac OS X. And turning off simultaneous downloads makes using JDownloader almost pointless.

If you don't know what 2) and 3) means you shouldn't be running the software that blocks jD.

If you've a firewall in your router, you don't need one on your computer.

Most people giving support here, including me, don't have any virus running on their computer.

I don't know who recommended you about "turning off simultaneous downloads" as it doesn't apply to your case. Where did you read that?

I DO have the clue, in fact I am still quite skilled in networking. I just love when programs work simple like "Ok, there was an error, but we can try it again right? Because our user still probably wants the file no matter what strange message appeared. So no need to wait for him right?" Current state is like tamagotchi - you need to click Enable. Or Resume. Or both. And again and again.
Sorry for confusion, taught you had referred to simultaneous downloads. I will try this trick.

You shouldn't have do that if your jD wouldn't be constantly blocked.

I'm going to add my voice to this 'complaint'.

Stuff sometimes goes wrong and files don't complete or some other error happened, like lack of disk space, or I, the stupid user, have accidentally deleted a file I shouldn't have. When that happens there is no way to tell JD to load the file again. Above all you must never try the 'reset' option because your link disappears, never to be seen again.

At the moment to 'restart' a file I do this:
1. copy the link using the 'Copy URL' option.
2. delete the failed link from the list or your new link won't start.
3. delete the failed completed file or the new link will fail because 'file already exists'
4. put the copied URL in the linkgrabber, since the grabber only seems to work when you didn't want it to, and not in this instance.
5. start the new link using 'continue all' or 'continue selected'
6. either move the link to the package you want it in, in the Download tab or move it later when it has come in.

It all seems a little elaborate to me. Wouldn't it be much easier to have a drop down option with the original (failed) url, that lets you restart the download, maybe with a request for conformation for over-writing it?

@ikke777
So you say that doing rightclick->Reset removes the file AND the link?
This shouldn't / CANNOT delete the link!

pspzockerscene,

in the many years i've been using JD 'reset' has made the link disappear. Nothing happens to the file. Not that I'd mind if it did since the moment I need to reload the file, the file that I have is a dud anyway, or I wouldn't have to get it again, now would I?

'reset' should give a chance to reload the file, with out going through those 6 steps.

So you click rightclick->Reset on a link/package and it disappears?
You must be kidding, this cannot happen.

no not quite, there is a pop up first giving you a choice:
please confirm
reset selected downloads? (attention: file(s) will be deleted (1 links)
ok/cancel

Sorry, but that's not my definition of 'reset', I'd call that 'delete'.

Oh, I should add that if you select ok, the link will be deleted. Like duh.

Reset means start from zero, so file(s) will be deleted.
(1 links) means a file from 1 link that will be deleted, not the link itself.

Please try once more, and observe carefully.

Yeah FILES of the links you reset will be deleted (why else would you reset a link??) but the LINKS are NOT deleted from the list!

Well all i can say is i used the option once a long time ago and lost my link because of that. It took me two days to get the link back, so i never tried using the option again. Like duh.

So it's old news I guess.

What is not old news is that JD does need a lot of fluffing and folding and petting and coo-ing, which can be very wearing at times.

I haven't ever experienced that with using reset, it always just removed the file from disk and reset the download in the configs to 0 so it would restart from scratch... It has never removed link or the entry in the download list. Exactly how long ago did you experience this??

Setting Max connections to 1 helped, but only for a while. Now we are back again - maybe there is a problem with hoster, but I think that JD should never hangs in "Download incomplete" or "Aborted" state.

Download incomplete is a result of previous error. Your log in post #6 shows you have an AV/FW/router/ISP issue that should be addressed first. The automatic retry is not possible with current release, maybe test again with next release.

Thanks, is it scheduled to implement? Because errors do happen and they always will - from my point of view, one of main reasons to use download manager is because it handles those errors by itself.
