Because I couldn't correct this, although I tried many times , I saved my JD folder, and successfully installed a new JD into an empty directory with updater.jar . Only Jdonwloader.exe was missing.
I copied it, plus the config and cfg folders from my previous, saved instance, and it seems to work now.

At one point, when the Updater needed updating, it was very hard to update (the Updater update kept failing). It appeared to me that the problem was a busy server.

Default extract archive without extra subfolder

I think I tried already all combinations of the create subfolder option, with
... only if archive contains > N files,
... only if >1 folders/files ON/OFF
Subfolder pattern %PACKAGENAME% or empty,
but I was not able to achieve my goal, that JD only create subfolder for those files (and not for folders in the archive) which would be in the download folder directly.

Is this working already ? What is the proper setting combination ?

Edit:
Please move this into a new thread, thanks

But I tried for several hours, otherwise the updater used to indicate the busy server.
And when I started updater.jar in empty folder, the problem disappeared.

Server busy = if I recall correctly, when the server is locked due to commits + building task taking place at the time user wanting updates. This prevents user getting out dated updates. Busy notification isn't that user friendly as it doesn't give any reason why it's busy. Maybe they have some bugs still to iron out with the new update system.

If the server is locked due to commits + building task taking place, the update system should say something like this: maintaining in progress, please wait ~10 minutes.

I don't know, why
Download Failed, Retry ...
Update Failed
is more user friendly, then a simple busy.

In the log there after the exception lists states that
Updateserver is busy. Please wait 30 Seconds.
in many times.

The only question is why was it busy - if it were at all, because the updates induced by update.jar went without any problems - no busy problems, immediately after my last update try.

So the original message Download Failed, Update Failed is correct.

Hopefully somebody finds the origin of this - it's only a pre beta version.

I don't know, whether it is interesting yet, but here is last state of Updater_2012-5-17.log from my saved folder.
It looks, that it was a long-term problem.

the build server works fast. It's usually built and uploaded files to the host server within seconds.

org.appwork.update.exchange.PackageException: DOWNLOADPACKAGE_VALIDATION_ERROR_INTERN

that is teh cause ;p Jiaz or Coal will be ontop of this maybe this weekend or Monday at worst
