Default Can't access connected drives in Ubuntu

I'm transitioning to Linux because in Microsoft's efforts to push everybody to 10 they are forcing hardware vendors to not support 7 & 8.1. I've upgraded to the 7th generation Kaby Lake CPU and the Intel onboard graphics are bricked off and are replaced with a Microsoft basic driver that will only allow one desktop. I had my son work on it to even get it to 1080 resolution. He also made some sort of script file to launch Jdownloader in Ubuntu and it works great except when trying to set a package folder I can't back up any further than the root of the system disk. I clicked browse under default and I can click on other drives in the left panel but it won't change to them. I'm a newbie to Linux and would be totally lost if my son hadn't done the install and made shortcuts for everything. To hell with Microsoft and their spyware OS. I've already taken my 7 machine offline and about to do the same with my 8.1. I paid a lot of money for good programs that only run in Windows otherwise I would drop them altogether. I'm just lucky my AsRock womanboard is one of the few that runs Windows perfectly with that CPU. A lot of people with other brands are posting about glitches and blue screens.
