Angry [Not a bug!] PLEASE give normal users access to attachments!

I didn't see a general discussion subforum, so I had to post in International Support (we really need a Forum Support subforum for things like this). I'm trying to view the screenshot posted in this thread, but I keep getting this:

Code:
Stargate38, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Same goes with attachments on other threads. Could you please give normal users access to attachments? I know of no other website that denies normal users access to each other's attachments, and there's absolutely no reason to do so. If anything, do it on a case-by-case basis, depending on the contents of the attachment. That way, attachments that have personal/private info will only be accessible by the staff, and those that don't will be accessible by everyone else.

Due to users uploading screen shots or logs of sensitive information we can not allow attachments to be viewed by other users. With different international laws on privacy we need to make sure users can not make mistakes that we are liable for. We don't/didn't like having to take this approach but at this time its best solution.

Yes but your reason is a little incomplete because not all reasons are international laws or privacy. Forum software (vBulletin v3.8) can only the function either allowed or disallowed but not special cases (e.g. own user files are allowed, case-by-case basis) with forum attachments.

sure, I'm aware of that. I was going to touch on it in my response, but I didn't as Im not sure why we didn't choose that route. Maybe because we would need to then find all attachments (previous) and vet them. I believe at a time Appwork was meaning to move to a new forum software in which this would have taken place as a fresh start

Maybe you could do it if you ever do move to that new forum software. Until then, you can leave it as-is, but please don't leave this "Declined" indefinitely. People should at least have access to the ones that don't have sensitive info in them.

Or code modifications (e.g. vB addon) without new forum software.

For now, please just PN us and we'll find a way to make the content available for the public.

As stated previously due to Certain info that might be posted "sensitive information we can not allow attachments to be viewed by other users. With different international laws on privacy we need to make sure users can not make mistakes that we are liable for." get used to it.

Yes I know this can be done but a Special script would have to be created and added when such is uploaded to the forum that the uploader would have to select to make it view-able to public. Often though such needs to be done very carefully and depending on the forum software doing such can sometimes create other problems for the forum itself. Then there is the issues of if/when the dbase for the forum breaks or gets corrupted for any number of reasons which could then allow even the ones that were selected not selected for private viewing to be shown.

Yes there are times when I would like to see some of the attachments to try to help others with problems when I could but, this is not really like other forums in the sense that it deals with some things that are frowned upon by certain (cough) entities.

I for one appreciate what the admins and programmers do here for us and as such I am used to the rules they have in place and well I have gotten used to it also.

Thanks for understanding that.

Also please keep in mind that our forum software is already very old and contains a lot of modifications.
As long as we're still using this we do not want to put any more time into such modifications either and risc a total breakdown.

I can't access my _own_ attachments WHEN I am logged in. Is that on purpose and what's the reason? If can edit my posts and view my URLs why can't view my attachments?

That is on purpose due to privacy reasons.
Yes you can edit your own existing posts.

In case you've uploaded an attachment and want to access it later, just ask a moderator. Only mods can view users' attachments.
EDIT

Merged similar threads!
