Default Feature Request: 'Views' pane also in Downloads pane

Note:I'd like to file it here as a separate feature request.

Next to LinkGrabber Table there is a 'Views' pane with 'Custom Views', 'File Types', 'Hosters'. For 'Custom Views' you can also create your own filters.

My request is about adding a setting to Advanced Settings where the user can enable this 'Views' pane also for the 'Downloads' table.

For LinkGrabber Table and for Downloads Table, already today the user can enable a horizontal scrollbar. So there would be no 'width' problem. This means, there will be no problem that there could be not enough room for all columns in Downloads Table.

If adding such a setting is not too much efforts, I'd really appreciate the implementation, which would e.g. allow using the same filters as with LinkGrabber Table.

This would be GREAT!

Believe this has been asked and declined in the past.
FYI: it was present in early revisions of JD2, but was removed due to the space requirement and maybe performance issues with gui refresh as linkgrabber and download tabs have different requirements. I believe the removal was before horizontal bar options where added (advanced settings).

Thanks for the information. I cannot remember that it had been there before, but that's too long ago, even though I have been using JD for more than 12 years now.

But thanks for mentioning the horizontal scrollbar setting!

Anyway, instead of removing it for what reason ever, why not let the user decide to enable/disable it then?

Adjustable width by dragging the separator would also be an option.

Default Pointing to the original...

I guess, the original has been overlooked: https://board.jdownloader.org/showthread.php?t=90784
So, this is just to point to my original request, and can/should be deleted, once the original has been processed.

Merged duplicated threads.

@StefanM
There is also weekends and special holidays in germany
We rarely overlook threeads and if we do, you can simply push existing threads after 7-10 days by posting a new reply in them.

I know all that, but Jiaz was very busy answering my threads, one after the other on Sunday(!).

And I wrote quite a few...

And that thread was the only one, which he did not address in any way. So, I thought it might have been overlooked...

Would that have the same effect?
So, you would see that there is a thread pending...?

Yes and noi.
We will see that there is a new reply in an existing thread and check that.

Of course, again, we can only reply when we're there e.g. not during the weekend
EDIT

Atm. this thread is still "pending for Jiaz to answer" and has not been forgotten!

It was also removed for other reasons which I had in my original response, but removed before submitting. Believe these attributed to memory/cpu cycles among other things, but performance issues if you want to sum it up. It was removed in our development phase, way before public beta and only present in svn, so you wouldn't have ever experienced it unless you had IDE setup and or compiled your own from source.

If you remember back to 0.9 and earlier it was fixed width to your screen size. JD2 added the ability to display a lot more columns which made it hard to display or read. Constant resizing issues which is why I asked for column locking feature. But the harder convincing conversion with Appwork was horizontal bars! Fought hard to get that option included.

Well done!
Still waiting for Jiaz's reply/decision regarding my Views pane request for Downloads table. Today, everybody has wide screen monitors. This plus horizontal scrollbar would solve the width problem.

However, according to my experience, it is possible to convince them. And I can only repeat myself: These guys are really doing a great job.

Could convince them
  • to implement full wildcard (*) and later also '?' search support.
  • to keep the LinkGrabber filters in Views pane from jumping (changing position, depending on checked or not)
  • to add a setting to hide Bubble Notifier, when JD window is not active
  • ...

So, these guys are open to suggestions. And they also added a few issues/bugs I reported to their todo list.

Thanks to their and mgpai's help I now have a script which alerts me of any successful core update...

The only - in my eyes very important thing - I could not convince them of, is a release history (changelog).

Which means, that the user cannot see which features have been added and they cannot see, which bug has been fixed in which release.

How can the user know, that now - after so many years - they can use * and ? in the search field. Before, there was limited support:

Entering *.txt in the past also returned file.txt.doc
Now *.txt would only find files with txt extension (at the very end that is)

And '?'-support is completely new.

How can the user learn about such things without haven a changelog?

So far, I was not successful in convincing them...

re: changelog
change log wont happen, as advised watch the svn commit messages either via svn client or github mirror (they only have trunk for memory). Most commits will have messages attached. Only downside there are multiple projects to watch, primarily JD trunk, JD Browser, AppworkUtils. Believe old changelog on the main website and then I maintained from a forum thread was only indication of what class updated and not what changed. This came from JD0.9 and the old nightly build console/terminal output.

re: how to know
So to learn, trail and error? Most people are not afraid to try, google, doing...

re: wildcards
and yes previously it was a contains filter vs match filter. Believe Jiaz indicated it was a conversion to regex anyway so wildcard support isn't native, more a porting over to regex with Pattern escaping of illegal characters.

Whatever the answer will be I'm sure it won't be added soon.

I've explained to you what you can do to get a sort of changelog.

By trying or reading our forums.
Seems like so far it hasn't bothered anyone except you.

Can you explain it once again, please. I guess I missed this one

Well, not necessarily!
Allow me to mention my example once again:
Support of '*' and '?' that is.

It seems to me that I was the only one asking for it in many, many years.

But I know from voluntary IT support I provide, that many Windows users are using '*' and '?' when searching for files whatsoever.

So, I'm convinced that also JD users would/do love that search feature.

But again: Nobody seems to have asked for it in years!
So, also nobody might have asked for a changelog in years, even though many would like to have it.

Not everything is logical in life, not everything is conclusive or reasonable either.

Concluding from 'nobody has ever asked for it' that nobody needs it, is not necessarily the right conclusion - that is my experience!

You've asked me via mail.
I told you that:
- There will be no changelog
- You can use our commit messages as changelog - you may as well auto-grab those and expose them somewhere else or write your own changelogs based on our commit messages

You then asked me for sources e.g. how to find those commit messages which I included - here again:
Unofficial github mirror repo (~24h behind):
github.com/mirror/jdownloader/commits/master
Our SVN:

Yes I understand / understood and didn't mean this in a bad made.
Most of your suggested & added changes made sense so far.

Exactly.

I did not.
I just stated that no one asked for it.
You'd for sure have to do some survey to confirm/deny that.
Users reading our forums are always free to jump into threads like this one and add their opinion.
