Try to do it without installer.
Get this archive, download it, unpack it and launch the updater:
upd0.appwork.org/jcgi/JDownloader

Does this install some Conduit toolbar? Will I be able to avoid installing it during the "update"?

you try update java and restart your PC?
maybe if you change the installation folder ...
disables antivirus during installation ...
check if you have administrator permissions ...

already tried with installers offline ...

Surprise (for me). That worked. But... why?

I'm using a user with admin permissions.

Yes, and that's what happened: http://board.jdownloader.org/showthread.php?t=47447
It didn't help when I used different installation folders. I tried the default (which I thought was strange) and C:\Program Files\JDownloader.

Well it's just what I happened to have read or what has happened to me, not as more help...
As I understood (my native language is Spanish), disabling your antivirus run the installation ... maybe the antivirus settings heuristic has very high and any activity that seems stops malicious ... Now if you have a current and valid license from your antivirus, you might consider asking the installer file to see if you have a virus ... shall answer you if you are paying ... and with that would come out completely in doubt, happened to me with kaspersky, he and I went up heuristics detect that the file was a virus toolbar.exe, send it to kaspersky lab and they said it was a false positive and corrected the next update ...but to each his taste ...

I'm using NOD32. It didn't give any warning/error (you know those pop-up things) before or during the installation.

Default This works

JDownloader 2 web installer was quitting halfway through the install process with no error message. Found this installer with a google search. It installed fine and appear to have updated automatically.
