Speed limit setting results in half the speed
Lately I noticed that setting the speed limit to some value results in getting approximately only half the speed as set. For example if I set the speed limit to 3MB/s downloads are running with about 1,5MB/s. If I unset the speed limit I get roughly the maximum download speed available.
Please see the two screen shots of the download speed display: first limited to 3MB/s, second unlimited speed. In the middle of the second screen shot I switched off the speed limit and you see the download speed raises towards the maximum available speed. The third screen shot shows the actual download settings with limited speed. I noticed this behaviour since some days. Before that I could not remember this odd behaviour. @jogol: No changes on speed limiter since years. No updates since weeks. The issue can happen because of static assigned speed limits. Eg 2 connections and settings speed limit of 3Mbyte/s, then each connection will be limited to 1.5 Mbyte/s. In case one connection doesn't saturate it's available bandwidth, then the rest will NOT be available to other connections and overall will be slower.
Another possible cause can be firewall/av when then have issues with the throttled connection and then become slower than expected. I'm sorry but currently there are no plans for any changes on the speed limit algorithm as this topic is more complex as it may seem. Throttling download only works by pausing the read from network from underlying OS so there are receive buffer overflow that lead to throttled sender rate. And because you don't know the maximum bandwidth from a connection in advance, you cannot simply assign the free speed to other connection as this takes away the changes for this connection to gain speed again.

@Jiaz: No big deal. When this happens again I simply change speed limit so that I get the wished speed limit...
Thanks for your extensive explanation, I can live with it so far. |
