Exclamation Required Patch and recommended antivirus

For Windows 6.x ("Vista" and "7"), the WFP patch should be installed. This fixes three problems that can cause the operating system to crash and can severely slow your system. The patch is available from Windows 7 and Vista WFP Patch. For

Security software has recently changed. My current suggestion for security software is
  1. Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials. A commercial alternative antivirus is ESET NOD32 (rated number one in several categories), but you must exclude jdownloader.exe, java.exe, and javaw.exe from all download scanning). PCTools.com Free antivirus (fast) can also be used successfully if ThreadFire is also used.

AVG is no longer recommended (It has become bloated. AVG can now break Windows so that it will not start). All-in-one packages (usually called Internet Security) are never recommended (even the engineers who work on them know that they are bloatware). Kaspersky, Norton, Symantec, and McAfee are not recommended because of poor performance.
  2. Firewall: PCtools.com Free Firewall Plus. For Windows XP, Vista, or "7", Microsoft Firewall is an adequate substitute. In both cases, make sure that you open holes in the firewall for all copies of jdownloader.exe, java.exe, and javaw.exe (PCtools will ask you, for MS, you have to do this manually).
  3. IDS: Threatfire (threatfire.com). This allows you to scan for "Root kits" and helps prevent system damage from threats that an antivirus cannot.

Before making any of these changes, save a restore point. Whenever uninstalling or installing a patch or security software, restart your computer both before and after.

For your convenience and safety, we recommend Firefox (or Chrome) with Flashgot, IE Page, Noscript, and WOT addons. Open Office is a safer (and free) alternative to Microsoft Office (and it can read Office files).
